The walled courtyard at Kāffi Galle Fort, timber arches around zigzag brick with a tree in the middle.

Nordic coffee & bakery · Galle Fort

The fort goes quiet at No. 10.

Espresso under the tree, buns out of the oven, and a courtyard the street cannot hear.

The colonnade at Kaffi Galle Fort, whitewashed columns and timber fretwork arches with a terracotta pot.

Behind the street door

The courtyard

Brick, shade, a tree, and a wall thick enough that Leyn Baan Street stops at it.

Two timber chairs and a low table in the back courtyard, dappled light across a weathered fort wall.

The building

A three-hundred-year-old house, and a tree in the middle of it.

Leyn Baan Street runs through the old Dutch quarter of the Fort. Number 10 opens into a walled courtyard: brick laid in herringbone, a colonnade of timber arches, a balcony above it.

Sit outside under the tree, or inside where the fans turn and the walls hold the cool.

A table and chair on the verandah at Kaffi Galle Fort, paintings on the whitewashed wall behind.

If that is the day you are having

Somewhere to work, with actual sockets.

Table service

Order once and stay put. Nobody will move you on.

Sockets you can reach

Not one behind a sofa. Solo diners get a table, not an apology.

Shade that moves

Busiest around one in the afternoon. Quietest before ten and after three.

Vegan and gluten free

On the board and in the case, most days of the week.

Two hands holding a teal glazed stoneware cup stamped kaffi.

Fika & lagom

A Nordic habit, inside a Dutch fort.

Fika is the pause you take with coffee and something baked. Lagom is the sense that just enough is exactly right.

Two ideas from a colder place that turn out to suit this one.
